But the Hamburg-born player has never
quite managed to turn teenage talent
into Grand Slam success, although he
has twice reached the semi-finals of
the Australian Open.
In his defence, Haas has suffered more
than his fair share of injuries - he
has broken both ankles while a shoulder
injury in 2002 kept him out of action
for 15 months.
That saw the Sydney Olympics silver
medallist miss Wimbledon again, having
bypassed it the previous year after
his parents were involved in a serious
road accident.
His Wimbledon record does not reflect
his talent, with the highlight a second-round
victory over Andre Agassi in 1998.
