The Russian's Grand Slam progress in
2005 has been steady but she has not
hit the heights of last season.
Dementieva was the only player to reach
two major singles finals, at the French
Open and the US Open, in 2004.
But despite having two Grand Slam victories
within her sights in 2004, Dementieva
seemed to lack the mental strength for
the big occasion.
She broke down in tears in Paris after
losing the final to compatriot Anastasia
Myskina and surrendered the US Open
crown to another Russian, Svetlana Kuznetsova.
At Roland Garros this year, Dementieva
lost to Elena Likhovtseva in the last
16. She was also defeated by Patty Schynder
at the same stage in Australia.
The Russian's rhythm has been bothered
by niggling finger and hip injuries
and she has yet to win a title this
year.
